Absolute knowledge of Hashem

Today, 26th of Iyar is the yahrtzeit of Rabbi Moshe Chaim Luzzatto ztk’l author of classic works of Jewish philosophy, known by the acronym of his name, Ramchal. It is said that by age 14, he already knew the entire Talmud and Midrash by heart. Ramchal’s Path of the Just, which describes a step-by-step process to attaining spiritual perfection, is a classical work of Mussar (Jewish ethics) that is studied widely today. Other of Ramchal’s important works include The Way of God, a systemized study of Jewish philosophy, and Da’at Tevunot, an exposition on kabbalistic concepts. He is buried next R’ Akiva in Tiveria.  (Aish.com)  May his merit serve as an advocate for Klal Yisrael, amen.

Our entire purpose in life is to arrive to the One and Only truth- Ein Od Milvado the absolute knowledge of Hashem.  There is no other power that brings about events without the ratzon of Hashem; ‘His will’ comes through His emissaries – a.k.a. ‘natural means’.

The Ramban ztk’l teaches in his commentary at the end of Parshat Bo- the intention of all the mitzvot is for us to live with emuna in Hashem and recognize His constant presence and intervention in our lives.  The result of which is a profound sense of appreciation for Him having created us and giving us the opportunity to live.  This is our sole purpose in life.

To bring this one step further our task is to differentiate between event and it’s seemingly ‘natural cause’ and link it directly to its true source – ratzon Hashem.  There is no other cause but His will; Hashem is the Seebat HaSeebot (Reason of Reasons).

The Gra’, the Vilna Gaon ztk’l, further elucidates on this teaching in his Mishlei commentary (22:39)- the founding principle behind the giving of the Torah to B’nai Yisrael is that they should place their complete trust in HaKadosh Baruch Hu; that is the entire purpose behind keeping mitzvot.

There is one and only one way to implant this recognition firmly and deeply within us; repetition and review.  Reminding oneself of this fundamental message evening, morning and afternoon is the only way to keep it viable in every step we take.  The world presents us with ‘nature’, coincidence and logical reason.  Learning emuna equips us with the necessary armor to pierce these outer shells and see Hashem in it all.

Today’s daily dose of emuna is dedicated to the hatzlocha of our son Netanel Raphael on the occasion of his 19th birthday.  May Hashem enlighten his path in Torah, mitzvot and ma’asim tovim and guide him to fulfill his task in life with a happy heart and emuna filled eyes, Amen.

Rabbi Yisrael the Baal Shem Tov HaKadosh, the founder of the Chassidic movement, was once asked: “Why is it that Chassidim burst into song and dance at the slightest provocation? Is this the behavior of a healthy, sane individual?”

The Baal Shem Tov responded with a story:

Once, a musician came to town — a musician of great but unknown talent. He stood on a street corner and began to play.
Those who stopped to listen could not tear themselves away, and soon a large crowd stood enthralled by the glorious music whose equal they had never heard. Before long they were moving to its rhythm, and the entire street was transformed into a dancing mass of humanity.

A deaf man walking by wondered: Has the world gone mad? Why are the townspeople jumping up and down, waving their arms and turning in circles in middle of the street?

“Chassidim,” concluded the Baal Shem Tov, “are moved by the melody that issues forth from every creature in G-d’s creation. If this makes them appear mad to those with less sensitive ears, should they therefore cease to dance?”

The Baal Shem Tov taught that it is not enough to be happy only during times of tefillah, Torah learning and doing mitzvot.  Rather, Hashem is everywhere and can can be found in all happenings.  Therefore, all that occurs in our life, everything that we see, hear and experience presents us with an opportunity to know and serve Hashem.  It is impossible to go about any occurrence without connecting with HaKadosh Baruch Hu.  Consequently we should strive to be joyful always as this is the key to all of our avodah in this world.

Today’s daily dose is dedicated to the refuah shleimah of Daphna Devorah bat Rivka Baila.  May Hashem bless her with complete healing of the body and soul and be blessed with only revealed good in every aspect of her life, Amen.

We learn of the virtue of simcha in many places in the Torah. For instance:

“Sos Asis B’Hashem tagel nafshi b’Elokai (I will rejoice in Hashem, my soul will be joyful in Hashem)” (Yishayah 61:10)

We learn from the Navi that genuine happiness is brought upon a person who intimately connects to Hashem and calls Him Elokai (my Hashem). Living with such an intense bond enables him to live as though he has already been redeemed.

“Lev samaech yaiteev ge’ha… (A merry heart is good healing medicine…)” (Proverbs 17:22)
The Metzudat Dovid ztk”l explains that happiness restores the body like medicine, yet a broken spirit dries one’s mind and bones. Most of a person’s weaknesses come from emotional turmoil. When he comes to happiness, his face beams and serves as a remedy for his frailty.

Many studies show the impact that emotional health has on the physical body. Improvements in areas such as immune response, blood pressure and ability to ward off illness can be readily noticed. Nothing has such a direct effect to ruin health and waste life more than grief, worry and a bad temper- in case we needed to reinforce more reason to put on a smile 🙂

Today’s Daily Dose of Emuna is dedicated to Amit ben Oshrit a 10 year old boy who was injured in Meron.  He is in critical condition.  May Hashem shower him with rachamei Shamayim and may he merit a complete healing among all of Klal Yisrael who are sick and suffering b’karov, b’rachamim, Amen.

Clarity = Joy

There is nothing like the experience of genuine, soul-uplifting joy!

Mystical teachings point that joy is closely linked to the sefira (Hashem’s manifestation) of binah (analytic understanding, the ability to connect the dots). In other words, it is virtually impossible to enjoy true simcha if we do not fully understand the point of why we are happy or why we are here.

Many may be surprised at this connection since we do not generally associate happiness with clarity. Yet, if we closely explore this thought we find that by its essence, the idea of fully grasping any concept entails the removal of all doubts and confusion. Consequently, when our mind and thoughts are clear, we are able to experience positive emotions such as calm and the ensuing happiness.

On a deeper level this bond involves attaching oneself to Hashem’s light, the source of all understanding. Whereas we may begin with parts and pieces, ends with unification and Oneness.

Some simple but practical ways to attain binah and hence joy:

1) Did you eat a delicious meal today? Thank Hashem – He sent it to you! And understand that it was clearly meant for you.

2) Did you bang your toe when you were walking? Thank Hashem – it is an atonement for sins and understand it was clearly good for you!

3) Did you understand something someone told you? Thank you Hashem – it is You who gave me knowledge and teaches us wisdom, and realize that Hashem wanted you to know this!

How is that for connecting the dots and experiencing true joy?!

Today’s Daily Dose of Emuna is sponsored for the refuah shleimah of Yehoshua Shlomo ben Sharon Pesha a young 12 year boy who has been fighting cancer for many years. His current cancer doctors after giving him chemo and stem cell treatment have advised the parents to take him home and make him comfortable because there is nothing more that can be done, r”l. Next month he is due to have his bar mitzvah. He is about to begin a very dangerous and experimental treatment at Sloan Kettering. Please daven that he merit a complete healing b’riut hanefesh v’briut haguf amongst all of those sick and suffering in Klal Yisrael b’karov, b’rachamim, Amen.

Avraham Avinu implanted within the Jewish people the concept of emuna. He challenged the pagan beliefs of his time and faithfully proclaimed the belief in One Supreme Authority. We his descendants are gifted with the name Ma’aminim b’nei Ma’aminim – Believers the children of believers.

By definition emuna means faithfulness and loyalty; a commitment to uphold the words of the Torah. This allegiance is not dependent on logical understanding or intellectual rationale. It is a declaration on our behalf to uphold the belief system taught to us by our Holy Torah by virtue of the fact that it is Divine, 100% truthful and just. All of this we inherited from Avraham Avinu.

The preservation of our Torah is credited to the loyal and consistent transmission from father to son throughout the generations. We know that the guiding messages of the Torah are accurate. It must be since without this knowledge we have no spiritual existence; likened to cutting off our spiritual air supply.

In Parshat Reeh (14:1) the Torah clearly states, “Banim atem l’Hashem (You are children of Hashem)”. Hashem will never forsake or abandon His beloved children.  We need to consistently reassure ourselves of this vital message at times of difficulty. This is the pathway to strengthen our emuna – fortifying the notion that Hashem’s love is eternal and will never perish.

In good times and in bitter times our emuna ought to flow in our mind and heart and permeate our entire being singing the words Ani Ma’amin – I believe!

Today’s daily dose of emuna is sponsored for the refuah shleimah of Rachel and Neerya Rivka b’not Liza.  May Hashem bless them with a complete healing b’riut hanefesh v’briut haguf amongst all of Klal Yisrael who are sick and suffering in Klal Yisrael b’karov, b’rachamim, amen.

To understand the connection between emuna and well-being we must first internalize the idea that creation did not originate from eternal matter but is being constantly renewed, as it says in the brachot of Shema: “Uvtuvo mekadesh bechol yom tamid maaseh breishis (and in His goodness renews daily, perpetually the work of creation.”) Hashem is creating life each and every moment from now to the next and from the next to the next; out of nothingness!

Although we often relate to time as one long link and are not sensitized at this time to feel every moment anew, we can still feel this freshness by focusing on the idea that creation originated from emptiness. When we recognize purpose and order in all of life’s events, we inject truth (a.k.a. emuna, health, wholesomeness, relief) into a seemingly disorderly world. By virtue of doing so, Hashem’s presence becomes more evident and consequently our lives feel more purposeful and pleasurable.

The Jewish soul remains eternally bound to its Divine source and sees the world through pure ‘emuna eyes’. The neshama knows only the truth and understands that the nature of fragmentation in this world is to provide us with an opportunity to create and restore order from chaos.

As we strive to reach into the core being of our soul, we effectively expose the building blocks of creation and begin piecing them together each in their correct place and order. Emuna instills our lives with vigor and thus enables us to join together with Hashem and bring His Oneness into the chaos reigning within and around us.

It is never too late to correct our ways – this is the first lesson of the day, today, Pesach Sheini. Is this a cause for celebration? Yes. Let us understand why.

The essence of this day is rooted in the fact that whoever was unable to partake in the sacrifice of the Paschal lamb on Pesach could still do so in the second month of Iyar, today, the 14th. Yet this privilege was not given to whoever deliberately did not perform this mitzvah.

Relating this to our day and time we are confronted day in and day out with a myriad of mitzvot to perform; some of which are intimately dependent on time. If we willed to do so, we could fill up our entire day serving Hashem. Yet, we cannot always complete that which we wish to achieve. The Torah instructs us to do our best, to want to want to do Hashem’s will.

Today we put this teaching into practice by reflecting on our desire and not on our deeds. Let us reflect on our unpretentious desire to live in the image of Hashem. Do we wish to? If so, let’s keep feeding that fire; onward and upward.

However, as today symbolizes the notion of a second chance, let us seriously contemplate whether we indeed embrace that desire. This second chance is awarded to those who wish to but for some reason were unable. Where there is weakening; there can be strengthening.

Rebbe Nachman ztk’l calls this a descent for the purpose of ascent; to go even higher. Now that is a reason to celebrate!

Some points to note on the 14th of Iyar: Pesach Sheini, the yahrtzeit of R’ Meir Ba’al HaNess ztk’l:

There is a custom to eat matzah on Pesach Sheni.
Pesach Sheni is the Yom Hilula of the tanna, Rebbi Meir Baal HaNess. There is a long standing custom to give money li’iluy nishmas Rebbi Meir Baal HaNess, as a way to find lost objects or for help in any area of life. The money should go, specifically, to help the poor of Eretz Yisroel.
The Chida ztk’l says that the source for this custom is the Gemara (Avodah Zara 18a-b) where Rebbi Meir bribed a guard to release his imprisoned sister-in-law. The guard asked what happens if he’s caught and Rebbi Meir told him to say Eloka D’Meir Aneini (G-d of Meir answer me) and he would be saved, and that’s what happened. From there comes the custom of donating money or oil for the neshama of Rebbi Meir, sayingEloka D’Meir Aneini, 3 times.

Rebbi Meir Baal HaNess said he would help those that gave to the poor of Eretz Yisroel, for the sake of hisneshama.

Reb Dovid of Dinov points out a fascinating allusion: Mishlei 12:25 says דְּאָגָה בְלֶב-אִישׁ יַשְׁחֶנָּה – if one has worry in his heart, he should suppress it. Mesechta Sanhedrin 100b explains this as ישיחנה לאחרים, tell it over to others. Mesechta Horios 13b says אחרים refers to Rebbi Meir. Putting it all together – if one is in a time of trouble give tzedaka for the neshama of Rebbi Meir Baal HaNess. (Tzemach Dovid)

The Baal Shem Tov says that if one is in danger and is in need of a miraculous salvation he should give 18gedulim (not sure of the modern day equivalent) for neiros in the shul and say:
Ani minader osan chai gedulim lineiros bishvil nishmas Rabbeinu Meir Baal HaNess, Eloka D’Meir Aneini, Eloka D’Meir Aneini, Eloka D’Meir Aneini, u’vichein Yehi Rotzon Milfonecha A-donai E-loheinu VE-lohei Avoseinu kishem Sheshoma’as es tefilas Avdecha Meir Vi’osisa lo nisim viniflaos kein ta’aseh imodi v’im kol Yisroel Amecha hatzrichim linisim nistarim v’niglo’im. Amen, Kein Yehi Rotzon. (Keser Shem Tov)

When we invest excessive time and energy in material security it results many times in despair over our inability to attain that which we desire. The Alter Rebbe ztk’l in his classic work the Tanya teaches that if we were only able to deeply etch the idea of creation ex-nihilo in our minds we would certainly be pacified from anxiety and distress.

Hashem in His infinite wisdom creates everything – every moment, every action, and every circumstance out of utter nothingness. Hence where is the room for despair? The essence of emuna is that Hashem is everywhere and all that stems from Him is complete goodness. Creation is happening at every instance therefore His goodness is showered each second.

Knowing that Hashem envelops and enlivens us with His nurturing care enhances our emuna and pulls us out of any state of despondency. Hashem plans our every step and leads us with eternal love. Our emuna testifies to this truth and as a result we are gifted with happier, more wholesome lives.

Through living a life of emuna we recognize that there is only goodness from Hashem. Examining the idea that creation began with chaos and is being rectified moment by moment into eternal order, settles our chaotic surrounding and leads us to a frame of mind that all is unfolding with reason and purpose.

===============================================

This was sent by one of our readers: (please respond directly to them)

Chaim, my husband, who as you know, is suffering from ALS and needs a respirator in order to breathe, had an unbelievable experience over Pesach. My feeling is that you might want to know about what happened, so I’m sending you this.

Chaim has been terribly ill all year. He had suffered from several hospital-aquired infections, received at least 10 rounds of IV and IM antibiotics, had intense attacks of high and low blood pressure, has had many blood transfusions and has been in and out of hospitals all year. Yet, with all of the tests coming out clean, none of the doctors could pinpoint what was wrong. ALS does not make a person sick in these ways.

One of our friends did much research and footwork for us, and finally put us in touch with a professor from the Intensive Care Unit at Hadassah Ein Kerem Hospital in Jerusalem. This man is a genius and a kind person. He called me to find out the details of all of my husband’s disturbing symptoms and difficulties over the last year. He was quiet for a few moments and then said simply, “He is being respirated improperly. He is most likely breathing almost on his own and the respirator he was issued is pumping air and excess oxygen into his system in dangerous ways, causing damage to his blood and circulatory system, digestive tracht, lungs and heart.” I was dumbfounded, as was everyone else I told, including other doctors.

We went to Haddassa Hospital, and Chaim was respirated by the professor with a different type of machine. Within hours his system began to stabilize. It turns out that Chaim has been fighting a fight for life against the respirator that was given to him. There is a new type of home respirator that detects the person’s breathing capacity every second. Until recently only hospitals could use this type of machine that tracks lung function. We discovered that Chaim is actually breathing well on his own, his lungs are perfectly healthy, he is able to breathe well without the addition of any oxygen. His lungs can’t expell enough air when he exhales, due to his ALS-weakened diaphragm (which is the muscle that pushes air out of one’s lungs). This was causing CO2 to accumulate in his lungs, which was the reason he needed to be respirated to begin with. We have learned that the machine he was issued from our health fund, was pumping extra air and extra oxygen at a set rate. This was working against Chaim’s own rate of breathe, as that machine cannot detect such sensitive vitals as when Chaim was pulling in his next breath on his own.

Within days of ordering this new home respirator for Chaim, which is a state-of-the-art, interactive computer, his hemoglobin began to rise, he had stable blood pressure and heart rate, excellent blood levels of oxygen and deeper breathing. He is now able to slightly move his head again, and is able to move his eyes easily in order to communicate with us for the first time in months! We had been speaking to Chaim non-stop all of these months as if he understood everything, even though we had almost no visible responses from him — and a good thing that we did!

He is answering us clearly now with his eye movements. Today, three weeks after beginning on the new respirator, Chaim followed the print of the entire Book of Psalms on a computer for 2 1/2 hours, while listening to a tape of Tehillim that his father had recorded 20 years ago. And this was in order to pray for his ailing father who was being operated on, may he be well!

We have to choose–between Chaim dying on a Kupat Cholim issued respirator– or Chaim living life with a respirator that helps him breathe. We are not able to receive this advanced respirator through our health fund, as it is not included in the Ministry of Health’s basket for healthcare. The cost– which includes 3 years of servicing by a private company, plus medical support– is around $22,000.

Most of our friends ask us this question whenever they see us:”How can I be of help?”. There are many ways to help Chaim, but the most crucial thing for him now is for us to be able to pay for this new respirator, that is giving him renewed life.

We have a tax deductible number at the Vaad Harabonim office called the ‘Chaim Reznik Fund number: #קרן מספר: 3308

Emuna and wellness

BS’D

The emotional wellness of the Jew is intimately connected by the level of emuna he/she holds. Emuna comprises of four different aspects according to the Radak in his book ‘Sefer HaShorashim’:

• Strength: Hashem’s ability to carry out that which He has promised to the Jewish nation
• Faith: Hashem has always taken care of His beloved children, thus we should have faith in Him as a result of such nurturing
• Nurturing: This interlocks with the previous implication; due to the fact that the Jewish people rely on Hashem and have faith that He will support them Hashem continues to do so, based on their emuna in Him.
• Creativity: This calls for a more in-depth explanation which we shall begin to explore and continue in the coming days.

Hashem created the world from nothingness. Yet, according to Kabbalistic tradition this state of oblivion did in fact contain aspects of chaos (according to the Mystics left over from the world that preceded this world, very complex so let us leave it at that). Following this unruly state Hashem designed our world; the world of rectification. Keep in mind that the word barah (to create) is rooted in the Hebrew word b’riut (health).

We deduce from this, as there is a connection between words that share the same Hebrew root, that creation or creativity take on a therapeutic form. As we work to create and weave our lives into order, we cultivate emuna and develop an overall sense of wellness and happiness.

Today’s Daily Dose of Emuna is dedicated to ther refuah shleimah of Yohan Moshe George ben Rivka.  He is a father in his 30’s to 3 small children on a respirator with brain edema after being hit by a bus a week ago.  He just took a turn for the worse.  Please pass this along and daven that he merit a complete healing amongst all of Klal Yisrael who are sick and suffering b’karov, b’rachamim, amen.

This is my G-d: Zeh Keli

BS’D

Rabbi Samson Raphael Hirsch explains the verse “This One will be my G-d (Zeh Keli)”.  As here in this moment I see and understand that my fate and my inner life has been directed by this G-d alone and so I will place the whole of my internal and external life at His disposal and allow my whole life to be directed by the Divine.

This G-d will be mine, keli, literally “The Director of my movements.” V’anvehu, and so I will offer myself to be a Divine home. My whole existence and life will be a sanctuary for Hashem’s glorification, the home of Divine revelation; this is the natural consequence of declaring zeh keli, this is my G-d.

Neveh designates a place which offers a refuge. Hence, neveh is a place that herds or flocks are supplied all that they require—where they can remain permanently without having to seek pasture elsewhere. Thus, v’anvehu literally means, “I will be a place for G-d” or “by my whole life I will prepare a place for Hashem of which He will proudly declare, ‘I now dwell amongst you.’” (Hirsch, Commentary on the Torah: Exodus, 189).

While our particular verse has often been understood as the basis for the concept of hiddur mitzvah (lit. beautifying a mitzvah, often through the use of  beautiful Judaica artifacts) Hirsch offers a very different reading. Far from “buying in” to the notion of anvehu meaning “I will glorify Him,” Hirsch latches on to the root of the word—connecting it to nun-vav-hey, meaning a resting place, oasis, or home.

For Hirsch, B’nai Yisrael declare that they are dedicating their whole selves to becoming refuges of the Divine. At the moment that Hashem provides tangible salvation for B’nai Yisrael rescuing them from slavery, each one of them declares in his or her own personal voice that he will become a loyal holy servant.

How different would our lives be if we could live in the spirit of Hirsch’s explanation of this verse! If we could aim to devote and build our lives according to the Divine blueprint—to create, as a response to the greatness of Hashem’s presence in the world, both a refuge for humanity and a true home for Him to dwell amongst us.

Today’s daily dose of emuna is dedicated to the refuah shleimah of Yona Menucha bas Leah Chana.  She is a young lady in her upper teens who had heart surgery when she was in 9th grade and now has reoccurring problems and was rushed to the hospital.  May Hashem shower her with rachamei Shamyim amongst all of Klal Yisrael who are sick and suffering b’karov, b’rachamim, Amen.
