Dig – Plant

Emuna is an inborn inner energy planted in our souls at Har Sinai on Shavuot. An outpouring of certainty and assurance showers all doubts as we hold strong to our emuna.

Life’s challenges weigh hard on us because we do not have a complete understanding of their meaning. If we were to take the time to ‘search for the diamond (meaning) within the mud’ emuna would surface and shine onto the difficulty and reveal its goodness. Emuna needs to be dug up. How? Trust there is more than meets the eyes and peel away at the surface to find what is hiding underneath the illusion.

When we left Mitzrayim we didn’t quite know where we were heading. The 10 plagues were 10 phenomenal opportunities to feel Hashem’s love. We walked through the sea, saw the Egyptians wash away and reached a remarkable level of emuna through the experience – embraced by Hashem’s protection and guidance.

We sensed firsthand there is only one reality; all is from Hashem and all is good. The recognition that Hashem is always taking care of us and nourishing our every move was planted into our consciousness then and continues to guide us until the final redemption.

The Art of Trust

Do we really believe the geulah is coming?  Trust is an unwavering belief; solid without a shmutz of doubt. When doubt enters trust, it becomes eroded and optimism diluted.

4 possible reasons why trust is painted in doubt:

  • Our trust in only surface deep. When our surroundings present us with an opposing reality our trust changes positions and favors our external senses and leaves behind our inner gut senses.
  • Pain overpowers our trust. Intellect loses strength when emotions are strong. We cannot rationally imagine that a solution is possible and will occur. This is a state of despair.
  • We cannot wait – we become impatient and do not want to hold ground throughout the process. It’s been too long and we do not have the discipline to wait any longer for our troubles to be resolved.
  • Unwillingness to internalize and reflect what’s lying under the difficulty. There is a message and we need to do a self-accounting of what it is.

These are some of the obstacles that lead to doubt and damper our emuna and bitachon. Think about which one you relate to most often.  Remove the doubt and watch your emuna and bitachon blossom.

Feel Great!

One of the most exhilarating moments in life is when you set yourself to make a change and actually do it. At that moment you feel empowered; you feel great!

Denial leads to inaction. Change begins by admitting I need to improve; be honest and say I need to change. So now what? According to the measure of willpower so too will you succeed – strengthen your resolve and make it your mission.

It begins with one step, the hardest step – to make the decision to change. Why is it the hardest? Since it is most bitter to say “I need to change”; not my neighbor, not my Mother, not my spouse – but me!

That inner sense that something has got to change and that something is me is a powerful feeling that puts us to action. It generally follows a feeling of discomfort; maybe even a touch inner ‘yuckiness’. Yet from bitterness comes sweetness.

Let’s not confuse bitterness with sadness. It is a sense of uneasiness that gives birth to change – it propels us to leave our current place and move elsewhere. If bitterness is left unaddressed it turns into heaviness, guilt and feelings of inadequacy; a feeling of closure and isolation.

Recognize it and use it to your benefit; set yourself into new motion and feel great about it!

Leaving the Darkness

Hashem created the world almost complete; but left out a part that needs to be improved. Mankind lives in this minuscule space of improvement constantly seeking perfection.  Freedom is the expression of movement and choice and our ability to create, grow and develop ourselves within this space.

Each one of us is destined to be great. Unfortunately if we do not tune into this potential we feel imprisoned, lost and confused; this is the idea behind slavery – feeling held back and unable to reach one’s potential.

Thus leaving Mitzrayim is shedding away the layers of restrictions, notions and behaviors – leaving Pharaoh behind.  Pharaoh is the discouraging nagging inner voice that whispers (or sometimes yells) “You can’t do it!”   The last plague the Egyptians experienced was darkness = sadness = despair = the inability to see what was latent in front of them.

Not being able to see your place in life emotionally challenges your self-confidence; that is the plague so many of us are currently experiencing before redemption.  A hardened shell of nothingness holding inner layers of fear and sadness.  How do we exit?  Through the great power of ratzon; an intense desire that breaks the walls of hiddenness and opens new frontiers for growth.

Saying the simple words, “I want to get out. Hashem take me out of Mitzrayim” leads you to the door; your gateway to freedom to actualize your greatness.

Boot Camp

The soul goes through many struggles while striving to attach to Hashem. As she ascends from level to level in her attempt to complete her mission, she will experience downfalls.  There is no need to despair; this is part of her refinement process.

Principally speaking, these spiritual falls are intended to drive us to come closer to Hashem.  As part of our effort to regain closeness, we begin doing teshuva and go through a process of self-accounting.  Rebbe Nachman ztk’l therefore teaches that descent is for the purpose of an ascent.

This lowly world provides our soul with the perfect environment it needs to battle, overcome and B’H elevate herself.  This world is like a ‘boot camp’ for the soul where we experience countless ups and downs to increase our ratzon (intense desire) to attach ourselves to higher and higher spiritual levels.

Knowing that life sends us periodical ‘wake-up’ calls enables us to prepare and appreciate these challenges; they are intended to keep us focused on life’s purpose.  We need constant reminders in order that our thoughts stay focused and differentiate what’s important from what’s not.

Genuine Security

Emuna is an innate gift given to every Jew.  The emuna seeds were ‘planted’ during the entire experience of Yetziat Mitzrayim; with every plague another seedling was lovingly planted in our hearts by Hashem, a testimony of His love for us.  We read in the Pesach Hagaddah, “Ani v’lo saraf (It was I {Hashem} and not an angel)” who redeemed you from Mitzrayim; so that we remember that we were and still are personally taken care of by Hashem Himself.

Genuine emuna is a settled intellectual conviction that what Hashem has promised will indeed come to pass.  Borei Olam’s promises of our future are as certain and reliable as though they were being told to us personally right now.  We should be keenly aware of Hashem’s love for us at every given moment.  The word bitachon (trust) is derived from the word betach (secure).  In other words it describes a state of safety, security and certainty, not just intellectually but emotionally.

“Ki karov eilecha hadavar me’od b’ficha u’vilvavecha la’asotoh (For the matter is very near to you, in your mouth and in your heart, to do it)” (Devraim 30:11).  Although this particularly refers to our ability to do teshuva, it is a well known teaching that after doing a spiritual accounting we are gifted with incredible closeness to Borei Olam.  The ability to bond to Hashem is very near to us, we need not travel far to access it, as it is warmly planted in our hearts.

Emuna Nurturing

At one point in the Torah Moshe Rabbeinu bitterly complains to HaKadosh Baruch Hu and states, “… Did I give birth to them (Ahm Yisrael), that You say to me, ‘Carry them (Ahm Yisrael) in your bosom as the nurse (oman) carries the suckling.  From where have I meat to give to this entire nation?” (Bamidbar 11:12). The root word of oman is the same as for emuna.

Just as the mother’s milk is vital in the growth of her infant, so too does emuna play an exceptionally important role in the life of a Jew. A newborn needs to be nurtured and tended to constantly in order to develop into a healthy individual.  Similarly, the Jewish soul must be supported through thoughts, words and acts of emuna to vitalize the body with strength to live and assist the soul to fulfill its mission.

However in the above described incident Moshe feels he can no longer care for the Jewish people and nurture their emuna.  Why did he meet ‘ends rope’ when he was asked to provide meat for Ahm Yisrael? After all this wasn’t the first time he was pressed with complaints from them.

This instance though was different since it depicted a nation who simply wished for meat to satisfy their physical cravings and not for existential purposes.  Ahm Yisrael pursued their material lusts severed from spiritual intent.  As taught in Kohelet material desires are never fully satiated, “A man does not die having fulfilled half of his lusts.”  One lust leads to another one.

From here we learn that emuna can be cultivated so long as we are not obsessively involved in material pursuits.  The drive for constant material gain is persistently met with dissatisfaction and complaints; a fortress barrier that prevents emuna from growing.

Elevating Words

The Ba’al Shem Tov HaKadosh ztk’l teaches of the immense light of holiness that shines from one universe to the next each time we daven. Our souls become enveloped in a great light each time we attach ourselves to the words of tefillah.  However we often get distracted by extraneous thoughts.

Each time a thought invades our minds during tefillah we should attempt to connect to Hashem through it.  For instance, a fearful thought should be elevated back to its source by relating to yirat Shamayim (fear of heaven)When a thought connected to an unhealthy taiva (desire) comes to mind bind it to the love of Hashem. This is a remarkable process called the ‘release of holy sparks’ from their impure husks and returning them back to their source of goodness; much like redeeming a prisoner from its captives.

Hashem ‘listens’ to every thought, emotion and word; everything is taken into account.  Our ‘battle’ to stay focused and filled with emotion during tefillah is a priceless gift we give to ourselves since we are rewarded with intense G-dly light of clarity and wholesomeness.

Focusing on the words of tefillah enables us to forget our corporal selves (our bodies) and bond to the Shechinah.  Here we are completely alone with Hashem; a genuine soul-union with our Creator.

Time to Get Up

Pain and suffering relate to emuna just as an earthquake shakes the earth; what is revealed as a result?  A valuable treasure or shattered destruction?

Hardships are like ‘wake up’ calls.  Depending on how deep we are in sleep the ‘alarm’ will sound soft or loud.  The Heavenly goal is to grab our attention and get us to shift gear; recognize Hashem’s presence in our lives.

Which state of sleep are we in?

1)      Are we dozing off but can still hear our name being called, yet are unable to reply rationally?

2)     Are we so sleepy that we need to be awakened to notice what is going on around us?

3)     Do we need ‘medical’ intervention (incidents in our lives) to awaken us?

4)     Is the state of sleepiness so deep that we are likened to be in a state of anesthesia, whereby all sense of feeling is removed?

As the urgency to get our attention becomes more pressing, we are summoned from above with stronger signs to respond.  The objective – motivate us to reveal our immeasurable potential and shine our light which was previously hidden from ourselves and others.

We have so much to do during our limited time here in this world.  If we are ‘asleep’ we won’t realize how much we could have done.  Therefore next time a challenge ‘caresses’ your life, don’t hit the sleep button. Rise and shine to a better you and light up your world!
