Gratitude cultivating idea: Create a wall of miracle pages. Tape up pages to your wall, and each night write 3 (little or big) miracles you experienced that day.

In these gratitude letters detail the kindnesses of someone you’ve never properly thanked and see Hashem’s Divine Providence in it. Read this letter aloud to the person you’re thanking, you’ll see measurable improvements in your mood. Studies show that for a full month after a “gratitude visit” (in which a person makes an appointment to read the letter to the recipient), happiness levels tend to go up, while boredom and other negative feelings go down. In fact, the gratitude visit is more effective than any other exercise in positive psychology.

It is a wonderful way to express your gratitude to Hashem everyday… For no particular reason but to say ‘Thank you Aba, I love You and thank you for giving me life!’

In the Hebrew language, there are 16 words for ‘gratitude,’ – each with a slightly different nuance. Through this we can learn that gratitude is such a fundamental, important part of being Jewish. And that the concept of gratitude is multi-dimensional, with many different shades and flavors. Here are a few:

  • There is one word in Hebrew for gratitude that means to appreciate the gifts we have in our lives.
  • Then there is another word that reflects the deeper level of finding the good even in the challenges that we face.
  • Another expression of gratitude teaches us to tell over our personal miracles to others – to share our miracle stories with our families, with our friends, even with strangers.

Choose one of these ways to express your appreciation today!

Wishing you all a great Shabbat 🙂

Gratitude is a sentiment we’d all do well to cultivate, according to positive psychologists, mental health clinicians and researchers who seek to help everyone create more joy in life. Feeling thankful and expressing that thanks makes you happier and heartier.

The biggest bonuses come from experiencing gratitude habitually, but natural ingrates needn’t despair. Simple exercises can give even skeptics a short-term mood boost, and once you get started, you find more and more things to be grateful for.

In our holy books, it is brought down that when a person publicly tells of a miracle that has happened to him, G-d calls over His angels to listen, and turn, makes miracles happen for everyone who is listening. Imagine turning every family dinner, or every time you meet a friend for coffee as an opportunity to bring such celebration through all the worlds.

Gratitude idea: Make your family mealtime a regular time for sharing the (little and big) miracles you each experienced throughout your day.

Gratitude is an emotion expressing appreciation for what one has—as opposed to, for example, a consumer-driven emphasis on what one wants. Gratitude is getting a great deal of attention as a facet of positive psychology. Studies show that we can deliberately cultivate gratitude, and can increase our well-being and happiness by doing so. In addition, gratefulness—and especially expression of it to others—is associated with increased energy, optimism and empathy.

Gratitude isn’t our default setting, we have to work hard to cultivate it. It’s a muscle that needs to be built – little by little, every day.

Gratitude isn’t a reaction, it’s a choice. It is not caused by good things happening. It is what we choose to focus on – in the midst of whatever is happening.  For five minutes today focus only on the good and thank Hashem for it!

Life is full of miracles. The key is to understand that the greatest miracles are those of every day life. A person that is very sick knows what a miracle it is to be able to walk, to eat, to be able to go to the bathroom.

We can find miracles in so many little moments. My baby looks up and delights in a bird flying overhead. He reminds me that every butterfly and every blade of grass is fascinating. Imagine if we could adjust our eyes to see the miracles in our everyday lives. If we could see the world with eyes like a baby, we could remember how amazing and miraculous every moment is.

DAY 1 OF THE GLOBAL GRATITUDE REVOLUTION:

Today, as we launch into our 40 Days of Gratitude there is such a special energy. Purim is a little less than a month away and had it not been a leap year, we would have experienced the simcha of Purim already.  So let’s tune our hearts in to the vibration of gratitude.

Pick something that you are about to eat today. It can be anything. Let’s say an orange. Before eating it, take 2 minutes to think about all the steps involved along the way that made it possible for you to eat this orange. All the helpers along the way:

  • The farmer that planted the orange seed many years ago;
  • The rain and sun and soil that nourished it for years while it grew into a blossoming tree;
  • The worker who picked and collected the orange;
  • The other worker that packaged it and sent it out;
  • The truck driver that drove it from the farm to the store;
  • The gas attendant, that helped the truck driver fill up gas on his way delivering the package of oranges to the grocery store;
  • The worker who unloaded it and displayed it at the store;
  • The money you had to buy the orange (and wherever that money came from, whoever is contributed to getting you the money you needed to buy the orange);
  • The legs that were working for you to walk to the store (and/or the car that was working to drive you to the store) and the hands that were working for you to pick up that orange

Now, take a quiet moment before you taste that first bite and say thank you.
And enjoy your orange!

40 Days of Gratitude: Join the Gratitude Revolution

Dedicated to the hatzlocha and teshuva of Jenya Tzvi Hirsch ben Anna Chaya Leah and Noah Daniel & Moshe b’nei Leah Chana among all of Klal Yisrael, Amen!

Why Gratitude? Why 40 Days?

What type of glasses do we put on each morning?

How do we choose to look at the world?

Do we look for the blessings in our lives –

Or do we blind ourselves by focusing on what we are lacking?

The essence of being a Jew is gratitude. The Hebrew word for Jewish is Yehudim, which describes an outpouring of giving thanks. 40 days is how long it takes to change a habit. If we each work actively on cultivating gratitude in our lives for 40 days – rather than complaints and entitlements – what a different world we would live in!

Come join the GRATITUDE REVOLUTION! Increasing your appreciation in life will increase your emuna!

As the world is waking up after the cold, dark winter and getting ready to blossom – let us cultivate within ourselves the trans formative power of gratitude – within ourselves, and within our world. By changing ourselves, and joining together with people all over the globe, we can change the world.

Here’s how:

  • Beginning 20th of Adar Alef, Feb. 29th, until Rosh Chodesh Nissan, April 9th, 5776/2016 pick any gratitude fostering activity that resonates with you – and commit to one (or a combination) for 5 minutes a day for these 40 days.
  • Say Nishmat Kol Chai once a day for these 40 days. This is one of the most beautiful poetic adoration’s in all of liturgical literature, recited as part of the Shacharit (morning) service on Shabbos and Yom Tov immediately following Shirat Ha-Yam (“Song at the Sea”). It is also said at the Pesach Seder. It is a tefillah of praise and appreciation to Hashem for all of the goodness that He endlessly bestows upon His beloved people. The first paragraph was known in Mishnaic times, the second was composed during the Talmudic period and the concluding part was added during the Geonic period. Of unknown authorship.   You can find the tefillah in every siddur as part of Shabbat Shacharit or on the following link in English:  click here
Please note the Jewish day goes from sundown to sundown – so, for example, anytime between when the sun sets on Monday evening and when the sun sets on Tuesday evening counts as one day.
  • If it’s too much to do both, choose either #1 (a gratitude building exercise) or #2 (saying Nishmat) for these 40 days. The combination of prayer and action is very powerful. But we are all human, with busy lives. We can do whatever we can do. Every little bit makes a difference. Better to take on something very small for these 40 days, and actually do it. Nothing is too small.
  • To sign up click here on the ‘Google Doc’ link.  You will receive little doses of inspiration and tips/ideas on gratitude leading up to and throughout the 40 days.
  • For any questions or comments, please be in touch: OritRiter@gmail.com,

Please share with friends, family, co-workers, whomever…
WE WANT THIS TO BE GLOBAL SPREAD IT TO EVERYONE!
Here are a few ideas for cultivating gratitude:

Start a gratitude journal. Every day spend 5 minutes writing down things that you feel grateful for;
  • Make your family mealtime a regular time for sharing the (little and big) miracles you each experienced throughout your day;
  • Any time you catch yourself complaining, ‘pay a fine’ of immediately saying 3 blessings you have in your life;
  • Create a wall of miracle pages – tape up pages to your wall, and each night write 3 little, ‘every day’ miracles you experienced that day;
  • Gratitude Jar – place a jar on your table where you (or each family member) regularly write something they appreciate or value in the other. Then, once a week, pull them out and read out loud as a family;
  • Make a ‘Noticing-the-Good’ notebook – choose a significant person in your life (or a person that maybe annoys you a bit but you want to improve your relationship with) and every day write down one positive trait you see in them.

Segulot for Yom Kippur

Special Segulot for Yom Kippur,

as told by Rebbitzin Yamima Mizrachi:

  • Very important to ask for forgiveness and forgive everyone. You must say the words “I am sorry / סליחה” and it is very important to ask the person to say the words “מחול לך, מחול לך, מחול לך” “You are forgiven, You are forgiven, You are forgiven” 3 times. Otherwise it is not considered that you are forgiven.

  • It is of the utmost importance to forgive your children and to say the words “You are forgiven…. מחול לך …” 3 times. Hashem is ‘upset’ when parents are upset with their children and have not forgiven them.

  • Before lighting the candles for Yom Kippur donate 18 of something as a Kofer nefesh. This truly has the power to take care of any unforeseen illness, chas v’shalom.

  • As is the custom on Yom Kippur to light yahrzeit candles for the deceased, a’h. On a separate table, light a candle for each member of your immediate family. It is called a “health” candle dedicated to the health of each one of your family members. Please make sure to light these candles away from the yahrzeit candles. If any of the candles blow out any time before the end of their wicks, then relight it at the end of the fast until it is completely finished down to the end of the wick/wax.

  • Very important to bless your children the special bracha written in the Yom Kippur siddurs before going to shul on Erev Yom Kippur. This is a moment of unbelievable power to truly bless them for everything: shidduchim, health, happiness, nachas, wisdom. It erases any curses that may have been said to the children, c’v. Can be done by Aba or Ima.

  • During the prayers in shul when the chazzan says: ויעבר…., v’Ya’avor… This is a time of unbelievable Rachamei Shamayim. Use it to ask for forgiveness from Hashem. It is as if there is a lawyer fighting your case in shul at that moment.

  • Neilah נעילה is a time when Hashem gives us the opportunity to request anything that just seems to be locked in place and just doesn’t seem to be getting answered. 20 minutes before sunset on Yom Kippur Hashem opens up the door that is closed all year long. This is a time of unbelievable sha’at ratzon, עת רצון.

  • When the congregants say שמע ישראל, Shema Yisrael, yell it out with them, this is a time of great unity in Klal Yisrael. All the Jews everywhere are in shul at the same time reciting Shema at the same time … Chazal teach that we should say this Shema as if c’v it were the last time, just before a person passes away. Ask Hashem to open the doors to your wishes.

  • As we say “ה’ הוא האלוקים” envision that we are ‘escorting’ Hashem back to Shamayim. He has been with us since the beginning of Elul and is now ‘going back’ so to speak to Shamayim. We say ה’ הוא האלוקים 7 times, envision that each time we say this we are ‘elevating’ Hashem to the next level in Shamayim until the 7th and uppermost level: Hashems home.

Each time we say ה’ הוא האלוקים we should ask for another wish. It is a time when the yetzer hara makes us confused because it is filled with kedusha and a very auspicious time, עת רצון גדול. Therefore, write your wishes down and keep it in your siddur and each time we say Hashem Hu HaElokim ask for one thing. Don’t waste these precious moments when you are standing in front of the Holy Throne. Don’t leave Hashem for a moment stay with Him. And just as the Kohen HaGadol would go into the holy of holies once a year for 30 seconds to ask Hashem on behalf of the nation, you are given this same chance. Escort Hashem home. Whoever is zoche to escort Hashem back to Shamayim during the reciting of these words, will feel his presence all year long, Amen!

  • At the end the Chazzan blows the last and long shofar sound and that is it -Hashem is now home and we are waving goodbye to Him. But it is at this time we should look towards the entranceway of the shul and envision Mashiach coming through the doorway. Envision all of the sick people being healthy, all of our loved ones and righteous tzadikim coming back to be with us…. This is a time for great hope…

May we all have a meaningful fast, one that truly cleanses us to better serve the Almighty with great passion all year long. And may we all be sealed into a wonderful year and finally see the end to all suffering with the coming of the Mashiach, AMEN‼
