Keen Awareness

For forty days, Hashem has showered us with endless doses of clarity and awareness to drive us to achieve our soul’s rectification. During this auspicious time, we are ‘face to face’ with Hashem and are keenly aware of what we need to do and repair. The way we think is more Divine and our response to life’s events is more G-dly.

The Torah’s mystical teachings bring down that our keter, dwelling place of Hashem’s will, is more open at this time; thus enabling us to sense the amazing good Hashem desires us to have. Throughout the year, it becomes challenging to perceive Hashem’s boundless love and care. However the ‘real you’ comes forth on Yom Kippur after many cries and screams of longing to be recognized and nurtured.

The Divrei Chaim ztk’l teaches that it is for this reason we are instructed to build a Sukkah right after Yom Kippur. The real you only needs a simple hut to live and sleep in; she finds her home in simplicity without materialistic garb and design, she simply wants to live in the constant embrace of Hashem.

Today’s daily dose of emuna is dedicated L’iluy nishmat Leah bat Joya a’h. May her neshama rest in the Divine radiance among all the righteous souls who have departed from this world, Amen.

Wishing everyone a meaningful and uplifting Yom Kippur and a warm and loving Chag Sukkot.

Our Uncle

One tear shed this time of year is equal to tears cried the entire year. Each of the ten days of repentance is an endless gift and value as they build up our intention on Yom Kippur. R’ Yechezkel Levenstein ztk’l teaches we should grab every mitzvah possible these days and put our entire heart into it.

Our neshama is looking for her beloved called Dodi, her uncle. Why does the Torah chose an uncle to depict a loving relationship?  Halacha teaches that even if a couple separates, their mutual children must still consider the siblings of their parents as uncles and aunts. So too does Hashem want us to recognize that He never separates from us and we will always be together (even if we think He has ‘divorced’ us!)

These days leading to Yom Kippur are considered one entire Eit Ratzon. To the measure that we desire to spiritually elevate ourselves so too we are given the Divine assistance to find our true selves. The way to increase our ratzon and inject a true desire to return is by feeling how distant we are from connecting to our soul. The more we need Hashem back in our life the greater assistance we are given to fulfill our true purpose in this world, B’H.

Today’s daily dose of emuna is dedicated L’iluy nishmat Sabale’ Aharon ben Yitzchok a’h. May his neshama rest in the Divine radiance among all the righteous souls who have departed from this world, Amen.

The Sweet Fragrance

The prayer of a single Jew is great; yet united tefillot are powerful beyond words. To this end, Hashem instructs that we combine our prayers with others; those righteous and those less worthy in order to compensate one another.

The Chachamim teach that our prayers are like an incense offering. Included in the mixture of sweet spices we must add galbanum (chelbaneh) a spice with a dreadful odor. So too is with the single Jew’s prayer who may feel sometimes ‘lower’ than others, she should still attach her prayers with the community of Israel as we each hold an essential ingredient in the communal prayer service. We should trust that Hashem will accept our tefillot. Just as the composite of the incense offering must include a lesser sweet fragrance so too each of our tefillot is of equal value and vital to complete the mix.

The arousal of one’s heart during this time of year must not be underestimated. The soft voice of the soul calls from inner depths and yearns to cling to the root of her holiness. The light of emuna that shines forth from the innocent desire of one’s soul is capable of sweetening the entire batch of spices and form a perfect blend as a korban.

Today’s daily dose of emuna is dedicated L’iluy nishmat Yosef ben Levi a’h. May his neshama rest in the Divine radiance among all the righteous souls who have departed from this world, Amen.

The Power of Tefillah

There is a beautiful secret found in the words “v’Ani Tefillati” (Tehillim 69:14). R’ Ya’akov Abuchatzeira ztk’l teaches that the gematria of Elul is equal to “v’Ani” and “Tefillat” is equal to Tishrei.

The outpouring of Rachamei Shamayim during the months of Elul and Tishrei propels each of us to do teshuva and forces the Heavenly gates open for it to be accepted on high. The energy of these months is found in the passuk, “Dirshu Hashem b’heematzo kra’uhu b’heyto karov” (Seek Hashem when He is found, call Him when He is near) (Yishayahu 55:6). Due to the luminous rays of Hashem’s thirteen middot of Rachamim during Elul we are showered with a newfound love of our G-dly soul and a desire to reach high spiritual remedies.

Because of this inner awakening, we merit the continuum of the passuk above “Elokim b’rov Chasdecha Aneini b’Emet Yishecha” (Hashem with Your abundant kindness, answer me with the truth of Your salvation). Here too we find a wonderful hint in the gematria of the word Yishecha which equals the word “Peshuta”.

There is a custom during the month of Elul to add into the tefillot “…Ki Yemincha Peshuta Le’kabel Shabim” (…for Your right [hand] is outstretched to receive those who return). As we merit to come close to Hashem His right hand (compassion) draws us into His loving embrace.

Today’s daily dose of emuna is dedicated to my Rivka bat Miriam z’l.  May her memory be blessed and may her neshama bask in the Divine Shechinah among all the righteous who have departed from this world, Amen.

Power of Teshuva

The power of teshuva is found in one’s mouth; by virtue of speech. When one speaks, she gives expression to her soul and awakens the G-dly spark within as written in Shir HaShirim, “My soul came forth when he spoke”. Indeed, true yearning is found in words spoken from a broken heart; to the point where one can find her soul about to part because of the pain caused by separation.  The Gemara depicts this state in Ta’anit 8a where it is written, “A person’s prayer is not heard on high unless he places his soul in his hands.”

The mode of prayer by tzaddikim is to break open one’s heart and ask Hashem to bring him out of darkness to light. We are a stiff-necked nation and we should use this stubbornness to remain strong and firm in our tefillot. Rashi teaches that we must pray repeatedly until our prayers are accepted and plead with Hashem to bring us closer to Him.

It makes no difference whether we feel we are praying properly or not. Words express the emotions that need to come forth and find precious favor in Hashem’s eyes. In fact sighing and groaning while longing to come close is all it takes to open the door to one’s soul.

Today’s daily dose of emuna is dedicated to my great uncle Ya’akov Picker ben Aharon z’l.  May his memory be blessed and may his neshama bask in the Divine Shechinah among all the righteous who have departed from this world, Amen.

Forty-Nine Gates

Rebbe Nachman ztk’l speaks of the importance of joining Tehillim with teshuva. There is a well-known kabbalistic teaching of the fifty gates of return of which forty-nine we have full access to. However, the fiftieth gate is personally governed by Hashem and is accessible only through special permission.  The forty-nine gates parallel to the forty-nine letters in the Hebrew names of the twelve tribes.

The Jewish people are granted special privilege to the forty-nine gates of return by virtue of their inner awakening to return to Hashem; however many cannot attain this level on their own. Recitation of Tehillim awakens the G-dly soul making us worthy of return and enabling access to these main gates.

Tehillim grants access to the letter of the tribes attached to each of these gates thus allowing us to truly return to Hashem. Dovid HaMelech is called the ‘Sweet Singer of Israel’ because the words of Tehillim have the power to awaken teshuva through Divine inspiration.

It was specifically in Mitzrayim where the tribes passed through the forty-nine gates of teshuva that made them worthy of the exodus and redemption.

Go Ahead and Talk

Conversing with Hashem may not come easy to many yet these coming weeks are the best time to take the challenge and begin.  Rebbe Nachman ztk’l teaches that talking to Hashem requires a great deal of spiritual commitment. The Rebbe goes as far as suggesting that if no words come to mouth we should merely take a word and repeat it until the right words come forth. Just repeating the words “Ribbono Shel Olam” opens the gateway to deeper forms of conversation waiting to spill forth from the depths of one’s soul.

In fact Rebbe Nachman prescribes the ‘silent scream’; an intentional tensing of the mind, which leads way to mental relaxation and newly sprouted words. The nefesh part of our soul, also known as the animal spirit and connection to the physical body, longs to be recognized.  To this end it is also important to talk to one’s body parts.

For example, talk to an aching body part and inject words of emuna and love. Tell your legs “I know I haven’t taken you to the right places until now, but I am striving to improve and walk to more spiritually refined places from this point onward.” This profound method sharpens G-dly consciousness and is a perfect way to develop a strong bond to Hashem during our personal prayer times.

All that occurs in this world happens because of the nation of Israel. When we do our job correctly, focus on inner and world peace, humanity blossoms. The gloomy clouds of fear and anxiety that hang around us are meant to drive us to do our duty. Our actions affect the entire world; the outside pressing forces whether it be challenges at home, financial or health get us to fulfill our commitment.

The Jewish people are judged based on how the world looks, not just with respect to themselves. We were chosen to be a ‘light onto nations’ or c’v we bring darkness into the world. On Yom Kippur, the day of judgment, we read the story of Yonah who ran from his duty and therefore caused others to suffer.  We too have a worldly mission and should not attempt to ‘sail away’ from carrying it out. “No calamity comes to the world but for Israel” (Yevamot, 63) and the world knows it. We are constantly blamed because the nations of the world realize that the Jewish people are the ones responsible for all their troubles.

There is no running away from our calling as the chosen people; it is our G-d given role and duty and the purpose of Jewish presence.

Today’s daily dose of emuna is dedicated l’iluy nishmat Talla Monir bat Hashmat, Hashmat bat Sultan, Sultan bat Sara, Yousef ben Shoshana and Albert Efraim ben Talla Monir z’l. May their souls bask in the Divine radiance among all the righteous who have departed from this world, Amen.
